A great innovation I have seen on French cars recently is called Stop and start. Peugeot Citroen (PSA) started selling this anti-idling technology as early as 2006. The gains in urban driving are no less than ten percent…
Indeed, thanks to start-stop systems, the internal combustion engine is automatically shut down while you are stuck in traffic or at the red lights. This important gain reverberates immediately on lowered greenhouse gas emissions.
Years later, Climate Progress tackle the subject by stating it could enable America to save up to 10 billion gallons per year ( around 40 billion liters or 250 million oil barrels )
Yes, stop-start systems could just help save this staggering amount of oil, which is just equal to around a month of the country’s oil consumption.
While this simple technology could cut massively oil consumption around the world it also could become an important job creator.
Is there anything not to like ? Not really, as such systems come standard in some vehicles while cost only $300 as an option on others.
Given how much they just can save you, I believe this is a no-brainer. I just hope it will become mandatory on all vehicles powered by internal combustion engines…
