The High Concentration PhotoVoltaic Thermal system To Climate Progress, Swiss researchers working with IBM have built a new solar dish, called the High Concentration PhotoVoltaic Thermal system (HCPVT)┬áthat tackles the waste heat problem by using it to generate fresh water.”

Yep, a solar installation that generates fresh water, thus solving two common problems faced in developing nations around the world. Icing on the cake, it could also be used for air conditioning.

If all this wasn’t enough, IBM believes this could be cheaper than comparable solar systems, less than $10 cent per kilowatt hour. Talk about genius !

Solar PV to become the cheapest option by 2018

Currently, the world is relying massively on to generate as it is cheap, awfully cheap – if you don’t take into account the negative externalities as it is polluting our air, our soil and is one of the main factors to climate change.

But what if solar became even cheaper than coal ? What if if became the cheapest solution ? We would then have a renewable, clean and cheap alternative to produce gigawatts of electricity.

Morocco to build five solar plants by 2020

It is no news for you if you subscribed to this website : solar thermal alone could provide up to a quarter of global electricity by 2050. The use of molten salt could enable our civilization to store solar electricity for up to seven hours.

Morocco is ideally located to harvest all this energy as the average sunshine there is over 3,000 hours per year ( over 8 hours a day ). The Kingdom will build for $9 billion (6.6 billion euros) up to 2 GW of capacity.

This will be brought by five different plants of both solar photovoltaic and thermal and will answer up to 42 percent of the national need by 2020.
