TreeHugger recently rejoiced as for the first time in over thirty years, coal has accounted for less than 40 percent of the local electricity mix. This is good news as coal is the most greenhouse gases emitting fossil fuel.
This steady and continuous decrease can be explained mainly by the increased production of local natural gas. But increasing renewable energies capacity and the shutdown of old coal-fired plants have been also contributing.
Let’s hope one day in the not-too-distant future coal won’t play any role in the United States, in the European Union and in the entire world. Let’s ditch 19th century dirty tech for 21st century cleantech !
