Smart thermostat programs itself to save energy

You would think that the inventor of the iPod would rest and enjoy the money he made afterwards. Well, he isn’t and this is great news for all of us as Tony Fadell invented a smart thermostat, the Nest Learning Thermostat.

Knowing that we adjust thermostats up to 1,500 per year and that over 10 million thermostats are sold each year in the U.S. alone, he started a new company which is now selling these great, design appliances.

Cleantechies notes that these thermostats sell for $249 and save up to $173 per year. It thus have a return on investment of less than a year and a half !

Not bad for something that could last decades…

Here is what Cleantechies is writting about it :

The Nest Learning Thermostat, designed by Tony Fadell’s new startup, Nest Labs, uses six sensors that track temperature, motion, humidity, and ambient light to control energy consumption.

Within a week, the device begins to create a schedule for heating based on the user’s habits, adjusting the heating and cooling automatically when no one is home and documenting how much energy is used each day.

Using a Wi-Fi connection, the technology also tracks weather conditions and forecasts, enabling it to better monitor how outside conditions affect the user’s energy use.

Imagine if such thermostats were installed everywhere. We would save tons of money and prevent the emissions of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide emissions per day !

Smart technology like this can literally change our lives and our civilization by preventing wasting money and valuable natural resources. And it is really good looking and design, don’t you think ?

Most unfortunately, they are only sold in the United States for the time being. I can’t wait to see them arrive here in France !
