UNEP willing to lead by example

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is doing a great job globally to help us all having more sustainable lives, stopping climate change and preserving biodiversity.

Albeit being carbon neutral since 2008 – thanks to planting trees – it is willing to cut its emissions by three percent per year. Most of them – 85 percent – come from air travel.

This is why the organization will invest massively in e-conference technologies and will take trains as often as possible.

Additionally, UNEP believes that by implementing the efficiency measures the organisation could save around $800,000 per year. (630,000 euros).

As the UN Under-Secretary General and UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner said :

“These are bold ambitions for any organization with a workforce of over 1,000, offices across the world and a busy international calendar involving implementing projects and policies and working with governments and other partners across Continents.

But we have a responsibility to lead by example, and all UNEP staff are aware that becoming more sustainable today is the only way we can protect tomorrow-and if we can get this right it should generate economic savings too.”
