Two important milestones for wind energy

EWEA here comes the windIn September, two important milestones were set for wind energy as installed capacities reached a 100 gigawatts and 50 gigawatts in the European Union and the United States of America, respectively.

The 100 GW of wind turbines are producing as much electricity as 62 coal-fired plants or 39 nuclear reactors or 52 natural gas generators as the European Wind Energy Association noted.

The market in accelerating exponentially in Europe as “it took two decades for these countries to reach 10 GW and just 13 years to add another 90 GW “

Can America end her love affair with cars ?

This was the question I had on my mind as I read that for the first time in 60 years, the US car fleet decreased by four million in 2009. Is this a limited phenomenon or will it continue ?

The Earth Policy Insitute believes this trend could last until at least 2020. This makes sense to me as with the economic crisis and relatively high oil prices, people are looking for other options.

From public transportation to carpooling and from carsharing to bikes (traditional or electric), there are many alternatives to cars. But will it be enough to change the American way of life ?

The huge potential of energy efficiency

cfl.jpg I am a huge advocate of energy efficiency since my Master’s thesis on the French residential sector and even believe this is the panacea to all our energy and climate problems.

So when two recent studies brought further data, I thought it would be nice to share them with you. One comes from the Earth Policy Institute – Lester Brown’s NGO – and the second one from an official US agency.

What can be done in lightning in replacing incandescent bulbs with CFLs can also be done in all the aspects of our lives. It is high time to stop wasting energy !

Lester Brown’s interview in Terra Economica

As I just finished this book from the renowned founder of the Earth Policy Institute, I will give you my review of what I consider an essential reading on environmentalism.

I consider it a must read as it brings not only solutions to most problems our Planet and Mankind are facing, but also hope for a better world.

Indeed, the book provides concrete and realistic solutions to vital issues like soil erosion, water and energy shortages or overpopulation.
