Europe to meet its renewable energies goals

These are good news, to the European Commission : “The EU will surpass its target to consume 20 percent of its energy from renewable energy by 2020, according to national forecasts submitted to the European Commission.”

Out of the 27 members, 12 may exceed their national targets domestically. But this isn’t the only good news as these renewable energies directives are due to create nearly 2.8 million jobs.

To date already 1.5 million people around Europe are working in the sector. All this is great but we still have to work in the meantime massively on energy efficiency and conservation and on nuclear.

This, and this only will enable us to cut our greenhouse gases emissions by a minimum of 25 percent by 2020 as the IPCC scientists urge us to.

To date, European electricity comes from 50 % thermal sources, 33 percent nuclear and 17 percent renewables.

I haven’t found any data on the whole energy consumption. If you have data, please share it in the comments !

Europe still imports 54 percent of its energy via mainly oil and natural gas.
