A cultural break – January 2007

Every month I will present here cultural products (video, book, DVD, album… ) that I truly enjoyed in the past month. This will be a break from our sustainable development topics.

To begin this section, I will talk to you about a video seen on the Internet and a book.

Firstly, the video. Thanks to friends, I came across a monument dedicated to the Pink Floyd. As a fan of the Floyd, I greatly enjoyed this 35-minute video from a live of Atom Heart Mother interpreted by French students of the Conservatoire de Paris.

The music seems to be as perfect as if the Pink Floyd had done it themselves. The video is astonishingly good and has all the effects that a professional video clip might include. Definitively a masterpiece that you can enjoy on : http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xrb6i_pink-floyd-atom-heart-mother

univers_book.jpgConcerning the book, it has for subject a hobby of mine : Astronomy.

By reading “Science et Vie” (website), a leading magazine in the domains of sciences, I came across a gem in their literature section.

This is what I consider as THE definitive book on the Universe, galaxies, nebulas and so on. Any single question that can be asked by an astronomy enthusiast will found its answer in this book.

From the formation of galaxies, the universe or mere stars, every single topic is tackled with brio. All major objects are shown on great photos or drawings and talked about. To end this book, an observation part is ideally found with all explanations, month after month.

Definitively a must-read for amateurs astronomists. The title of the book : “Le ciel et l’univers : Cosmologie, conquête spatiale et astronomie”, by Gallimard Editions ; 49 € ( official link ; amazon.fr link )

I edit for English readers : the book does exist in English, it is published by Dorling Kindersley books and you can find their page on the book here : link to the official DK Books website.

The name of the book says it all : ” Universe : The definitive visual guide“. (amazon.com link)
